Sweden First to Put
Carbon Labels on Food

Sweden, has been at the forefront of many new carbon emission reduction initiatives, and is the first country to put carbon dioxide labels on food products in grocery stores and on restaurant menus. Each label lists the amount of carbon dioxide emissions associated with the production of that food item, so people will know just how much greenhouse gas their food is contributing to climate change.

This is part of an experiment being pioneered by the Swedish Government's Nutrition Department in an attempt to encourage people to consider not only their health but also the health of the environment when they are choosing the food they eat. If successful, it will become common practice across the nation.

Since the carbon emission labels started appearing on menus, sales of climate-friendly items have risen 20 percent.

We applaud Sweden for her leadership and wise planet-loving endeavors to awaken the public to take action to help quickly resolve the climate change crisis.
