More smoking bans have been implemented in US colleges and universities recently. In New York, Governor David Paterson has signed a smoking ban for all college dormitories and student group residences, which extends an existing prohibition in State University student dormitories and group residences to those of private colleges and universities. In Pennsylvania, Chancellor John C. Cavanaugh of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education has interpreted a statewide smoking ban policy to apply comprehensively and has now prohibited smoking at 14 state universities, with smoke-free environments that include outdoor courtyards, parking lots and athletic fields.

To honor their enlightened leadership and wise initiatives to create a smoke-free and healthier environment for the students, Master sent letters to Governor Paterson and Chancellor Cavanaugh to express Her sincere appreciation.

Chancellor Cavanaugh personally wrote to Master sending his heartfelt gratitude for Her support of the law and policy of banning smoking in colleges, and affirmed that, “The health and welfare of our students and staff is a responsibility that we take seriously and we will continue to provide a healthy, wholesome environment in which the educational needs of our students can be met.”

Thank-you letters from Chancellor Cavanaugh and Governor Paterson’s representative

The letter from the governor’s office expressed gratitude to Master for recognizing their actions to protect the wellbeing of students: “The Governor is always encouraged to hear from others who are motivated by a humanitarian spirit and who devote themselves to improving the lives of others.”

We applaud our wise leaders for helping to elevate our globe into a new golden era where all of God’s children can live in good health, happiness and love. May our world soon be free of damaging substances such as these, with clean air and improved health for all.
