The Premier of Queensland Anna Bligh

On May 26, Golden Year 5 (2008), Queensland’s Premier, the Honorable Anna Bligh, in Australia, banned smoking in cars carrying children under the age of 16. The state government’s cabinet had approved changes to the state’s anti-smoking laws to include the new ban. Premier Bligh stated, “Queensland now enjoys a national reputation as the best smoke-free environment.”

Premier Bligh’s excellent leadership in enforcing the ban and protecting the health of children earned her a Shining World Leadership Award from Supreme Master Ching Hai. In Master’s Award letter to the Premier, She wrote: “By banning smoking in cars carrying children under 16, your government cares and protects the youngest and most vulnerable in society, our future – the children.”

In a letter from the Office of the Premier, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier wrote: “The Queensland government is proud that it boasts the best smoke-free environment in Australia and will continue to look at further reforms in the future.”
