The First Vegetarian March

By Wellington News Group (Originally in English)

[Wellington] On May 31, Golden Year 5 (2008), five days before Wellington hosted World Environment Day, people from all walks of life in New Zealand joined together for the first time with one united message: Go Veggie, Be Green, Save the Planet. They marched through the City Center, holding placards displaying messages such as “Green Diet = Green Earth” and “Vegetarianism Won’t Cost the Earth.” This Vegetarian March was organized by the local fellow initiates who established liaisons with other organizations and coordinated participation from all New Zealand Centers.

Over 100 people took part in the parade, with both adults and children wearing animal or vegetable costumes, chanting SOS messages and handing out flyers along the way. Passers-by stopped to take photos or show their support. Two vegetarian professional singers sang beautiful songs about the Earth. A thousand-word public appeal was read out urging people to “return to a noble and compassionate way of living: to love our co-inhabitants, whether human or animal, to respect creation and our planet Earth.” This same appeal is scheduled to be published in a national newspaper soon.

When the parade proceeded to The Beehive, the seat of Parliament, TV cameras and journalists were present to cover the event. The Honourable Marion Hobbs, MP for Wellington City, received the group on behalf of the Prime Minister. Ms. Hobbs addressed the walkers and mentioned that her son is a strict vegan, drawing a huge cheer from the crowd! She accepted gifts from the Earth walkers - a native tree, a basket of organic fruit and vegetables, symbolizing a more sustainable way of living, as well as a letter to the Prime Minister. The letter was signed by the Earth Walk Group, which included the New Zealand Vegetarian Society, the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Save Animals from Exploitation (SAFE), Young Greens (young members of the Green Party) and the Hare Krishna group, requesting the government to place a high priority on promoting a plant-based diet and educating people about the close link between our diet and global warming. The highly successful walk was concluded with the song “Give Veg a Chance” to the tune of John Lennon’s “Give Peace a Chance.”
