Simon Eng By Vancouver News Group, Canada (Originally in English)
Simon Eng, a 23-year-old Canadian, loves his volunteer job of preparing school kits for children in disadvantaged countries. His enthusiasm is not in the least diminished by the fact that he has some disabilities. He said, “Poor countries, poor people and poor children – I want to help them.” Simon began packing the school kits in November Golden Year 3 (2006) and in 15 months, he had succeeded in packing 14,000 kilograms of school supplies into 10,000 kits, eventually reaching 10,000 eager children. When Supreme Master Ching Hai heard about Simon’s wonderful achievement, She awarded him with the Shining World Compassion Award. On May 11, Golden Year 5, our Association members from the Vancouver Center flew to Calgary, Alberta to present the Award to Simon, with representatives from the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), where Simon does volunteer work, and Columbia College, where Simon is enrolled in a special program. Simon was very touched upon receiving the Award. His eyes brimmed with tears and everyone present was delighted for him. In his speech on “My Meaning of Help,” Simon said: “… I don’t have money, but I don’t need money to help children, and to go to school and learn. I have my hands and they are enough to pack the needed school supplies for children to attend school. I don’t see those children, but I don’t need to see them. I know they are in poor countries and I also know that they need help and love. I am very happy working at MCC and I hope to make children happy too.” After the Award presentation, all participants celebrated together with a delicious vegetarian lunch provided by our Association members. Simon then demonstrated how he does his packing of the school kits, so decisively, so quickly, knowing that every kit is very important. Our heartfelt thanks, Simon, for being such a wonderful model of unconditional kindness. In extending your love and help to children in need, you are indeed a Prince of Shining Compassion!
