A Proactive Campaign to Save Mother Earth
By Perth News Group (Originally in English)
[Perth] To help stop further deterioration of the Earth’s environment, initiates from the Perth Center began a series of campaigns to spread the word about climate change and the need for people to adopt a vegetarian (vegan) diet.
As
part of this effort, the SOS message is being posted in the
Sunday Times once a month for a whole year. A flyer
carrying Master’s message was distributed with a widely-circulated
local newspaper, reaching a large number of Perth residents. Also, with
help from one of the school’s environmental representatives, Perth
sisters and brothers held four highly successful “Stop Global Warming:
Go Green, Go Veg” activities at Murdoch University, as well as the
Perth Sun Fair at the University of Western Australia. Initiates also
worked with local environmental advocates in climate-change actions such
as a joint letter asking the government to take the lead in this urgent
matter. Moreover, one community paper in Perth, The Independent Express,
has agreed to publish a portion of the SOS brochure.
An opening ceremony was hosted for this new dining concept, with media and politicians invited. Attendees included the mayor of Melville, his wife and representatives from newspapers such as Australian Chinese Times, Joondalup Newspaper Group, Melville Times, Fremantle Herald and the West Australian. A DVD on global warming was screened, with a fellow practitioner’s talk highlighting the importance of going veg to curb global warming. Many of the invited guests were very surprised by certain facts, especially to hear of livestock farming’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. The mayor’s wife reflected that she had not previously considered that climate change could be affected by diet. The mayor said he appreciated the opportunity for people to switch to a vegetarian (vegan) diet regardless of personal circumstance. All attendees commented on the delicious food and said that this initiative was “brave, inspiring, beautiful.” At the end of this event, each participant received a gift package including Master’s latest book, The Noble Wilds, along with a DVD on global warming and vegetarianism. As of today, the response to the project has been overwhelming. Non-vegetarians who come by for a complimentary meal report on the goodness of the food, saying that they are attracted by its health benefits, and its surprising variety and simplicity. Many customers have commented that they now have an insight into how they can contribute to the alleviation of global warming.

SOS Activity at the Queen Street Mall By Brisbane News Group (Originally in English)
[Brisbane] On March 28 and 29, Golden Year 5 (2008), fellow initiates from the Brisbane Center conducted an SOS stall in the busy Queen Street mall in downtown Brisbane to inform the public about the urgency of alleviating climate change. The initiates handed out SOS flyers, AL flyers and DVDs with the SOS message, which many people accepted immediately. Some passers-by stopped to ask questions, and one lady who was a yoga instructor felt so inspired by the SOS message that she joined the initiates in handing out flyers. A teacher on a field trip with a group of school children also dropped by and grabbed many flyers saying, “This is what we need to learn about.” In addition, several passers-by took the opportunity to sign the veg4earth petition, which is also available online at veg4earth.org. In May 2008, the petition will be submitted by Senator Andrew Bartlett, a vegan politician, to the Parliament of Australia. The Brisbane initiates look forward to setting up more stalls
in the future as a way to inform the public about the need to mitigate
climate change.
